Guide to Alternative Investments

Most of our clients are either in or nearing retirement and looking for ways to diversify their investments. Alternative investments can potentially add value to an investor’s portfolio as they have historically proven they have the potential to help reduce volatility, mitigate risk, and increase passive income.

Opportunity Zones

Opportunity Zones differ from 1031 Exchanges and DSTs in a number of facets but may still provide significant investment and tax advantages.

Many of our cash management solutions involve alternative funds. Given the uncertainty in the financial markets over the last several years, investors have become more strategic about their investment allocations and asset strategies. They still want their investments to provide the potential for attractive returns, but they also want them to be historically less correlated to equity markets and, as a result, more diversified.

Alternative Funds

An alternative investment is an investment in asset classes other than stocks, bonds, and cash. Despite unique risks and considerations, alternative investments can be useful tools to strive to improve the risk-return characteristics of an investment portfolio. They can potentially increase diversification and reduce volatility, given historically low correlations to more traditional investments; and they may hedge certain portfolio exposures, thereby reducing concentration risk.

Opportunity Zones

A Qualified Opportunity Zone (QOZ) is a designated census tract in the United States that has been selected by a state governor and certified by the U.S. Department of Treasury for inclusion in the QOZ Program. This incentive program is designed to encourage long-term private sector investments by delivering certain tax benefits to investors through investment vehicles called Qualified Opportunity Funds.
